The Path Ahead - Priorities, Challenges and Opportunities for Data Leaders in 2025
Published:
This report from Cynozure highlights key trends, priorities, and challenges for data leaders as they navigate the complex landscape of data and AI.
The findings from their latest survey shed light on the opportunities ahead, as well as the hurdles we must overcome as we move into 2025. With 50 senior leaders from diverse industries across the globe contributing, Cynozure have gained meaningful insights into how organisations are adapting to the increasing demands for data and AI-driven strategies.
One of the most striking findings of this year’s survey is the disconnect between the ownership of data and AI strategies within organisations. While over 85% of organisations report that the Chief Data Officer (CDO) or VP/Head of Data owns the data strategy, roughly 25% say the same for AI strategy. In fact, over 20% admit that their AI strategy lacks clear ownership altogether. This is concerning because, in today’s fast-paced environment, AI has become a critical enabler of innovation, efficiency, and competitiveness. Without strong leadership, organisations risk falling behind in realising their full potential.
This gap represents both a challenge and an opportunity for CDOs. As data leaders, they are uniquely positioned to step into the role of AI strategy ownership. The integration of data and AI strategies is essential for driving impactful outcomes. Whether it’s automating routine tasks, improving customer experiences, or driving new innovations, AI relies on robust, well-governed data as its foundation. CDOs who take the lead in unifying these strategies can not only strengthen their organisation’s competitive edge but also elevate their own roles to broader leadership responsibilities.
Interestingly, nearly a third of respondents see the CDO role broadening to encompass other leadership positions such as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) or Chief Information Officer (CIO). Those data leaders who are working to seamlessly integrate data and AI across core operations to ensure it is supporting the organisational vision and driving innovation are best positioned to make this move.
